The Cockcroft Institute

The Cockcroft Institute

Opened in 2006, The Cockcroft Institute is a joint venture between the NWDA, University of Liverpool, University of Manchester, Lancaster University, and the STFC (Science & Technology Facilities Council).

Based at Daresbury Laboratory, it provides an educational infrastructure, intellectual focus and scientific facilities for accelerator science R&D.

The Institute links university research groups to research topics of the ASTeC (International Centre for Research in Accelerator Science and Technology), with 103 scientists and engineers presently working in the Institute, (56 from ASTeC and the 47 from the participating universities).  Research themes include Accelerator physics, insertion devices and magnets, intense beams, RF and diagnostics and vacuum science.  Students studying towards MScs, MPhils and PhDs at the centre are registered with Lancaster, Liverpool or Manchester Universities.  Lecture series on accelerator science are held at the institute in recognition of the different academic backgrounds of the students.
